In Otaku: Japan's Database Animals, Hiroki Azuma theorized that what distinguished the anime girl from other mediums was that she was built of intentionally interchangeable characteristics, that more than a character, each anime girl was an assemblage of pieces (e.g. cat ears, tsundere, sailor uniform). While much can be said for how the anime girl was designed as such to be an object of desire, the more compelling attribute is this inversion, of her birth as a subject. As things beyond the cliché world of anime escape her mouth, do those words fall to her place below meaning, or reveal the meaning latent in patterns and databases?
