This was our first production. From experience we knew that drawing initial interest in the project and finding the right collaborators was something easier done once something already exists. Claire Elise, who went by niko mas at the time, effectively underwrote this "ghost issue", an issue zero, a hysterical gesture. It worked, in a way, because people began submitting work, enough, just about, to prompt a turn towards thinking about Becoming as an online magazine.

Within Issue Zero, there is a general attempt to do what Deleuze would call contouring, creating a territory through incisions, in whatever form that seemed feasible. There are some reviews, some elaborations, some histories, case studies, an interview with the now late-Achim Szepanski, which is a funny text in of itself, possibly one of the worst interviews ever, but significant all the same. A lot of ground is covered, and there is a lot going on here, and its contents are arranged according to an almost proto-CoreCore logic: a fast sequence of familial but somehow distant voices, themes, frameworks.
