Where Does a Body Begin?

Biology’s Function in Contemporary Capitalism

77

The book's title "Where does a body begin?" asks a question that begins to reveal some of the issues faced in the field of Biology, namely the difficulty with which contemporary Biology has in determining the limits of the body, or rather what constitutes the body and what doesn't: where, precisely, is the body? Where does it begin?

When is a Body?

Preface to MYB’s Where Does a Body Begin?

“This text serves as a wonderful introduction-come-review of MYB’s book, and with the discussion of Kairotic time, it serves to position the reader in the sweet spot of the sound system...”

On Materialism

Embodying the Procedurality of Being in Virginia Woolf’s The Waves

75

“In terms of great circularity, editor of Becoming (a!kira) was writing a book chapter that had a lot to do with materialism, and it was interesting to find, through reading the work of Thomas Nail, a parallel drawn between Lucretius and Virginia Woolf: the only true Philosophers of Movement. Woolf is framed as a part of what Louis Althusser called “The Underground Current of Materialism”...”

Interview with Female Wizard #1

A Body Complicates

74

We made friends with Female Wizard very early on in Becoming, they popped up around the time of the release of Technically Man Dwells upon this Earth; very cool person, intelligent and very much alive. We remember thinking quite dinstinctly, wow, Female Wizard, if she likes us, we must be doing something right. Fast forward six months and we both end up in Berlin, and there we got to meet, and hang out and chat. It was super, she is amazing. Love her. We recorded many hours of interviews and it may take a while to get through the transcription process, but we will disseminate the discussions piece by piece.

Online Bodies

Accelerated images, Bodies in Transition

73
“Online Bodies seeks to explore the manifestation of the body in virtual spaces. The film consists of seven short non-causal parts, each showing a different angle on the online body. The film passes along bodies in transition: a deepfaked porn actor, a 3D model that wishes to be reproduced, a group of genetically modified humans that live inside an alien, four friends discussing cyborg modifications, a body that cannot get up an escalator. They are each short peeks into the massive stream of online imagery and its social impact. The project looks at the physical consequences of online potential and its reverse, for better or for worse.” – Mischa Dols

“The New Film is born out of a viral encounter between the human body, cinema worlds and internet cultures. When science fiction meets speculative theory.” — Contour Biennale Belgium

Essential CDCY

A selection of essays from Crossdressing Diogenes’ Archive

72a
72b

72e

These three essays were published as part of an essay zine series by Crossdressing Diogenes back in 2021 called On Raving. Essay #1 was printed by itself, essays #2 & #3 were combined into one zine, aswell as #5 & #6. Essay #4 was intended to be “On the Death of Raving”, previously republished by Becoming, but it never made it to print, and somehow the schedule got mixed up. Crossdressing Diogenes sadly died before ever getting to publish essays 7-10, although some of that work ended up being published by NON

72a — #1: On Commodification
72b — #2: On Tripping
72c — #3: On Musicking
72d — #5: On ‘Non’
72e — #6: On ‘Non-Minimalism’

Reintroducing Crossdressing Diogenes

Introducing Becoming.press

71

Becoming started as a sublabel to Crossdressing Diogenes, believe it or not. Somehow Becoming grew from just a sublabel to a magazine, to a publishing house of its own. Crossdressing Diogenes faded out as Becoming grew, and at some point the house of CDCY burned down, to be forgotten. Having moved to Berlin, and having spent some time rebooting the radio project Affects & Dreams, and writing extensively about music in the accompanying book, as well as all my written work with Honest Electronics, Mille Plateaux and Lumbung Radio, it quickly became apparent that having a space for publishing music would be very useful. It’s something of a perfect circle, a perfect inversion, where two years after Becoming was founded as a sublabel to Crossdressing Diogenes, we can now announce that we are bringing back Crossdressing Diogenes as a sublabel of Becoming.
